Officially known as the City of San Antonio, this Texas hub is currently the seventh city in population size in the U.S. and the second in Texas and the rest of the Southern United States. The city was first founded by the Spanish as a mission and colonial outpost back in 1718 and became the first civil settlement to become chartered in Texas in 1731. The San Antonio-New Braunfels Metropolitan Statistical Area, more commonly known as Greater San Antonio, has San Antonio as its center. The area has a large population, being 3rd largest in Texas and the 24th largest metropolitan area in the country. Thanks to growth around the Interstate 10 and 35 corridors to the east, west, and north, it's likely that the area will keep on expanding.
Due to its original funding in the Spanish Colonial Era, there’s a church, the San Fernando Cathedral, located in the center of the civic plaza. Characteristic of many Spanish towns, cities, and villages in both Latin American and Spain. Another trait from its Spanish heritage is its name, which came from an expedition in 1691 for Saint Anthony de Padua.
There are five 18th-century Spanish frontier missions in the city, such as San Antonio Missions National Historical Park and the Alamo, which were both designated as one UNESCO World Heritage Site. Other important attractions in San Antonio are Seaworld, Marriage Island, the Alamo Bowl, the Tower of the Americas and the River Walk. For commercial entertainment, you can visit Morgan’s Wonderland and Six Flags Fiesta Texas amusement parks.
The armed forces have various facilities around the city, such as Camp Stanley, Camp Bullis, the Lackland AFB/Kelly Field Annex, the Randolph Air Force Base, and the Lackland Air Force Base outside the city’s limits. The only one inside the city limits is Fort Sam Houston. Kelly Air Force Base previously operated in San Antonio up until 2001, when they transferred the airfield to Lackland AFB.
