The city’s founding dates back to August 30, 1839, founded by land speculators at the confluence of White Oak Bayou and Buffalo Bayou, which is now known as Allen’s Landing. It became incorporated as a city on June 5, 1837. Houston’s name comes from the former General Sam Houston, a man that had won Texas’ independence at the Battle of San Jacinto from Mexico, and would become a president of the short-lived Republic of Texas.
Initially, it was the capital of the Republic during the 1830s and grew steadily into a trading center for what remained of the 19th century. In the 20th century, various economic factors helped bring rapid growth to the city. Houston eventually diversified and became home to NASA’s Johnson Space Center, home of the Mission Control Center, and the Texas Medical Center, the largest concentration for institutions dedicated to healthcare and research in the world.
Its economy has a strong industrial base in aeronautics, transportation, energy, and manufacturing. Leading in building oilfield equipment and in healthcare sectors, the city is second in most Fortune 500 headquarters of any U.S. municipality within its limits. The Port of Houston is the number one in the country in waterborne tonnage handled and the second in total tonnage.
The “Space City”, Houston has become a global metro with strengths in research, medicine, education, technology, sports, science, fashion, media, culture, entertainment, international trade, and business. Its population is diverse, having people from various religious and ethnic backgrounds, with a growing international community.
You can find a large number of cultural institutions and exhibits, with a Museum District that attracts over 7 million visitors a year. The Theater District in Houston is filled with an active performing and visual arts scene while offering year-round resident companies for all the major performing arts.
