According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city’s area is a total of 385.8 square miles (999.3 km2), 340.5 of those square miles (881.9 km2) are land, and the rest is (45.3 square miles or 117.4 km2) are water. The city constitutes one-fifth of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, where one-quarter of Texans live.

Dallas and its neighbor Fort Worth were originally developed as a byproduct of the primary railways in the area which allowed access to cattle, cotton, and eventually oil in East and North Texas. Dallas secured its place as a center of commerce and transportation thanks to the major highways and loops that surround it.


The city is a strong financial and industrial center and has become an important inland port thanks to the merging of interstate highways, major railroad lines and the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (among the largest and busiest airports worldwide).
