More About The U.S. State Of Hawaii

Hawaii received statehood on August 21, 1959, and became the most recent state to join the U.S, and is the 50th to do so. The state is the only one to be located in Oceania and is also the only one that is composed by islands in its entirety. It occupies most of an archipelago located in the Pacific Ocean and is also the northernmost island group in the Polynesian subregion of Oceania. Lastly, Hawaii is the only American state to not be located in North America.

The entire volcanic Hawaiian archipelago forms part of the state, made up of hundreds of islands spread out over 1,500 miles. The main eight islands found on the southeastern end of the archipelago are, ordered from southeast to northwest, the Island of Hawaiʻi, Maui, Kahoʻolawe, Lānaʻi, Molokaʻi, Oʻahu, Kauaʻi, Niʻihau. The Island of Hawaiʻi is the largest in the archipelago and is often called “Hawaiʻi Island” or the “Big Island”, to distinguish it from the archipelago or the state. The archipelago forms part of the Polynesian subregion both ethnologically and physiographically.

Its oceanic surroundings, active volcanoes, an abundance of public beaches, warm tropical climate and diverse natural scenery have made Hawaii one of the most popular destinations for biologists, volcanologists, surfers, and tourists. Thanks to a 19th-century labor migration and to its central location in the Pacific ocean, Hawaiian culture has strong influences from East Asian and North American cultures, not just its indigenous culture. There are more than a million permanent residents in Hawaii, as well as many U.S. military personnel and visitors. The state’s capital is Honolulu, located in the island of O’ahu.

Even though Hawaii is the 11th least populous and 8 smallest state, it's also the 13th most densely populated out of all 50 states. The Hawaiian coastline is around 750 miles long and is ranked as the fourth longest in the country, after the Alaskan, Floridian and Californian coastlines.

Spelling Of The State Name

The name has been a source for political controversy ever since the Constitution of the State of Hawaii decided to add Hawaiian as a second official language in 1978. This caused an issue because the constitution uses the name “The State of Hawaii” in Article XV, Section 1 of the constitution. When the document was drafted, diacritics were not used in the spelling of the name, because the document was written before the use of the kahakō and the ʻokina (ʻ) in Hawaiian orthography. This was an issue because the official spelling of the state name in Hawaiian is Hawaiʻi, with the ʻokina.

The federal government first recognized Hawaii as the official name in the Hawaii Admission Act that gave Hawaii its statehood. Following this, the Seal of Hawaii, department and office titles, and government publications have been using the traditional spelling without the symbols used in the native spelling. In contrast, the University of Hawaiʻi, National and State Parks Services and certain private enterprises use them.

There exists no precedence for the name change of a U.S. state ever since the Constitution was adopted in 1789. However, Arkansas was first recognized as the Territory of Arkansaw in 1819, before becoming the State of Arkansas, and the Constitution of Massachusetts made a formal change to the name the Province of Massachusetts Bay into the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in 1780.
