The state of Delaware is among the 50 states that make up the U.S, and it’s located in the Northeastern or Mid-Atlantic region. It is bordered to the east by New Jersey and by the Atlantic Ocean, to the north by Pennsylvania, and to the west by Maryland. Delaware takes its name from an English nobleman that became Virginia’s first colonial governor, Thomas West, 3rd Baron De La Warr.
The state forms part of the Delmarva Peninsula and is located in its northeastern portion. It’s the sixth least populous and second smallest state, yet it still is the sixth most densely populated. The state is divided into three counties, the least amount in any state. From south to north, they are Sussex County, Kent County, and Castle County. New Castle County is the most industrialized of the three, while the other two have historically been more than all agricultural.
There existed several groups of Native Americans in the state before the Europeans arrived in the 16th century, such as the Nanticoke in the south and the Lenape up north. The first colonization efforts were done by Dutch traders at Zwaanendael, close by to what is currently the town of Lewers. Delaware was among the 13 colonies that became part of the American Revolution. Later on, on December 7, 1787, Delaware earned the nickname of “The First State” by becoming the first state to officially ratify the Constitution.

The state is 96 miles ong, and ranges from 36 miles to 9 miles across, with a total area of 1,954 square miles, it being the second-smallest state in the country after Rhode Island. Even though Delaware is bordered to the east by the Delaware Bay and the Delaware River, small parts of the state are located on the east side of the Delaware River shores, having a land boundary with the state of New Jersey. Together with two Eastern Shore counties of Virginia and others from Maryland, the state of Delaware helps form the Delmarva Peninsula, that stretches all the way down to the Mid-Atlantic Coast.
Its northern boundary with Pennsylvania is quite unusual. Most of the boundary between the two states was first defined through an arc that extended 12 miles, starting from the cupola of New Castles’ courthouse. Often named the “Twelve-Mile Circle”, this boundary has the honor of being the only nominally circular state boundary in the country.
The border goes all the way east until it reaches the low-tide mark off the New Jersey shore, where it continues south on the shoreline until it reaches the 12 mile arc south, and finally the boundary continues in much more conventional manner through the main channel in the middle of the Delaware River. To the west, a part of the arc goes further than the easternmost edge of Maryland. What's left of the western border goes a little east of due south from what is its intersection with the arc. The remaining wedge of land between the Maryland border and the northwest part of the arc was claimed by Pennsylvania and Delaware until 1921, when Delaware’s claim was confirmed.
