Idaho Falls came from Taylor’s Crossing, a timber bridge meant to cross the Snake River, that would have a town grow thanks to its utility. Matt Taylor, a freight delivery specialist along the Montana Trail, originally constructed the bridge in 1865. After the Bear River Massacre in 1863, and the suppression from the military that would plague Preston Idaho, the river and the crossing would help westward migration.
Freighters, miners, and people seeking the gold hidden in Montana and Idaho (in particular, Virginia City and Bannack in the west of Montana), greatly benefitted from the bridge. It didn’t just help settlers moving north and west. An eating house, a post office, a stage station, a livery stable, a small hotel and a private bank were all developed by the bridge, helping the town blossom.
Thanks to a basalt island that was located at Snake River a nesting site for around 20 eagles, located approximately 7 miles upstream, the town would end up getting the name of Eagle Rock, around 1866. A man known as Harry Rickets had previously worked a ferry nearby, in 1864, so the area had already obtained the name of Eagle Rock for those that traveled the Montana Trail.
Willow Creek received water rights in 1874, and soon after the first crop would be harvested there. Even though there were some buildings, settlement was still sparse and lacking, consisting only of minor irrigation and some of families. In 1874 the first European child was born in Eagle Rock.
