Called the “City of Angels”, thanks to the name’s Spanish meaning, Los Angeles has achieved fame due to its sprawling metropolis, ethnic diversity, and Mediterranean climate.
The city is settled within a large basin, bound by the Pacific Ocean to the west, and by 10,000 ft. tall mountains on the other side. The cities size is around 469 square miles, and it's the current seat of all Los Angeles County, the county with the highest population size in the nation.
L.A. is the main city in the Los Angeles metro region, the second most populous in the U.S. after New York City. It also forms a portion of Los Angeles-Long Beach’s statistical area, which is also the second most populated in the country.
Historical dwelling place of the Tongva and the Chumash people, in 1542 Los Angeles was annexed to Spain by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, at the same time as the terrain that would eventually become Alta California. On September 4, 1781, the city was officially founded by Felipe de Neve, a Spanish governor. After the Mexican War of Independence in 1821, it became part of Mexico. And after the Mexican-American War, in 1848, as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, the city was purchased along the rest of California and became part of the U.S.
On April 4, 1850, Los Angeles became an official municipal territory, before California had even managed to achieve statehood. Thanks to the discovery of local oil, rapid growth came to L.A. in the 1890s. With the 1913 erecting of the Aqueduct that helped deliver water to the eastern side of the state, the city’s rapid growth continued.
L.A. is an economic powerhouse in the United States, thanks to its diversity of cultural and professional fields. Birthplace of Hollywood, the world’s center for the entertainment industry, Los Angeles is ranked ninth in the Global Economic Power Index and sixth in the Global Cities Index. L.A.’s entire statistical region has the third largest GMP in the world ($831 billion as of 2008), behind the New York metro and Greater Tokyo areas. In 1932 and 1984, L.A. played host to the Summer Olympics, and will do so once again in 2028.
