The capital of the U.S. state of Alabama, Montgomery is the head of Montgomery County. Getting its name from Richard Montgomery - a major general of the Colonial army with a colorful past - it is seated on the banks of the Alabama River, off the coast of the Gulf bordering Mexico. As of 2010 according to the U.S. Census, Montgomery is the second most populated city in Alabama after Birmingham, at 205,653 people.
In 1819 the city merged with two smaller nearby towns along the Alabama River. In 1846 it gained status of the state capital after a monumental power shift to the central-south area as the cotton commodity crop grew in Alabama along the Black Belt and Mobiles rise as a important export port in business and mercantile on the Gulf Coast. As of February 1861, the city was picked to be the first Confederate States of American capital - lasting until the seat of the Confederate government changed to Richmond, Virginia in May of the same year. As of the mid 20th century, Montgomery housed many protests and major events relating to the Civil Rights Movement. Most notably the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the Selma to Montgomery marches.

Montgomery has always boasted a major military presence, and today the same applies. Maxwell Air Force Base is housed in Montgomery, as well as many government agencies such as: Alabama State University, Auburn University at Montgomery, and Troy University (Montgomery campus) as far as public universities; the private post-secondary institutions Huntingdon College and Faulkner University; as well as the emerging technology manufacturing industries such as: Hyndai Motor Manufacturing Alabama; finally the Alabama Shakespeare Festival and the Montgomery Museum of Fine arts are held in this, the states capital. And since its founding, two United States Naval ships have been named after Montgomery, inslucind the USS Montgomery.
